I Love to See the Temple

Temples are a very special place to me. They are why I do what I do. They are why I have children, why I strive to be a better person. They are what bind and seal a family together beyond this life. When a couple is married in a a temple, they are sealed for all eternity. "Until death do you part" is not applicable, as long as you follow the Savior and try to keep His commandments.

I think it would be hard to have so many children or to be married to my best friend if I thought it would all end with one simple accident, with death. I know we have a Heavenly Father that loves us so much. He values the importance of families. Families are central the His plan. And He intends for families to be together longer than in this world.

Those not given  the opportunity to be married in the temple will be given the chance in the next life.

There is a temple close to where I live. I take my children to the temple grounds often because of the peace it brings. The grounds have been beautifully manicured and there is a wonderful feeling that abides there.

I want my children to love the temple as much as I do. I decided since we were in Utah for the family reunion that we would try to see as many temples as we could. We sort of did a temple Marathon. We visited 13 different temples on our vacation and took pictures in front of them.
I think my children really enjoyed it. They really liked the Manti temple and the huge hill that it sits atop. They rolled down the hills and had fun.
They were curious about the Vernal temple because it was not white like the rest. It also looked different because it was a historical building made into a temple. It is beautiful, but different.
They were very surprised at the size of the Monticello and Lubbock temple. They are mini temples and about the size of a church building.
We saw: 1. St George, 2. Salt Lake City, 3. Albuquerque 4. Lubbock, 5. Manti 6. Monticello, 7. Provo, 8. Mt Timpanogos, 9. Oquirrh, 10. Jordan River, 11. Bountiful, 12. Vernal, and 13. Draper

Grandma's House We Stayed

It has been years since I have seen my grandma. She lives pretty far from me and I haven't travelled much the last several years. Since we were traveling to her neck of the woods for the family reunion, I wanted to make sure I stopped off and saw her.

I am so very glad that I did. My children had so much fun with her.

We showed up at her house without notice. I know, so rude. But I didn't know my plans. She wasn't there when we arrived. My mom insisted she would be because she can't drive anymore because she is mostly blind. Leave it to my grandma to figure out a way to stay busy. From what I remember, she always stays so busy.

We made a few phone calls and discovered she was down at the senior center volunteering. We hunted her down and she was there washing dishes. Who volunteers to wash dishes?

When she realized we were there and I had brought my whole clan with me, she started crying. She was so happy to see us and it was wonderful to see her too. She said since she was volunteering she could quit for the day and let's go on home. So we left that place and headed for grandmas house.

I wasn't sure what to expect. Grandma only had two boys and here I was bringing a whole lot of children to her home. My cousin, Wendy, had volunteered her place for me to stay and I had every intention of taking her up on her offer. It is a lot to spring children on anyone, let alone an 82 year old grandma who has peaceful evenings at her home. Plus you add Nathan to the mix and you never know what you'll get.

Grandma insisted on us staying at her home. I made sure she was really okay with it and she was. I dont think she knew what she was getting herself into, but I was happy to be able to spend some time with her and even more happy for my children to get to know their great grandma.

That evening my uncle came over to visit. The uncle I was named after. That is why my name is spelled with an "e" instead of an "a". He holds a special place in my heart, so it was great to see him, even if it was a short visit.

Then my cousins Kerri and Wendy and their beautiful children came over for supper. And what a yummy supper did they bring. They brought over the most delicious chicken fedichini and spaghetti and raviolis and bread sticks and salad with amazing dressing. I tell you those cousins of mine know how to do dinner just right. They knocked themselves out with an incredibly delicious meal and I was a lucky recipient.

It was great to see them. They are fun to be around and my children had fun playing with their cousins once removed. Or is it second cousins. Or cousins twice removed? I don't know, but they had a great time.

And now I am getting off track and making this a super long blog post about the yummy food when it is supposed to be about the wonderful visit I had with my grandma.

So night time came and we had to figure out where we were going to sleep. My mom and I got one queen bed with Gavin sandwiched in between us. There was only one other queen bed so grandma offered to have some of the kids sleep with her. Spencer and Camie jumped at the offer.

Grandma shared her bed with Spencer and Camie and Lucy. Lucy is her other child, a dog. And it was one rough night for Grandma. And Lucy.

Spencer kept flinging his arms and legs over grandma all night long. Grandma finally put a bank of pillows in between her and Spencer to keep him off. She said it was a terrible night for sleep and boy did she need a nap.

We did a little sight seeing that day and grandma took a 4 1/2 hour nap. It was a rough night.

I guess she didn't mind because the next night she invited Camie and Spencer to sleep with her again.

And the results weren't any better. Only this time Spencer stole Lucy's (the dog) pillow. Lucy didn't like that at all and started growling at Spencer. Of course Spencer slept through the whole thing.

Grandma insisted the next morning that I need to get Spencer checked for a sleeping disorder because something must be wrong with as much as he moved and flopped around. I think his problem is either he's a kid, or he is one of my children. Cause all my children do that. I can't sleep with any of them or I don't get any sleep.

I dont know what I was thinking letting them sleep with grandma. She is a trooper.

Oh, and I forgot to tell about the "silver sneakers" class I attended with grandma. I have to work out four times a week this summer because of that bleep bleep summer of seals thing I signed up for. So I thought, I'll go to the rec center and work out with my grandma in her class. It will be easy, I'll get to spend time with her, count it as one of my workouts for the week, win win situation here. I was so wrong. I couldn't believe how hard the class was! I was the only one under the age of like 80 and I was struggling to keep up! Go grandma! You amaze me!

One more final comment before I wrap up this eternally long blog entry. Taneal and Camie had a blast playing "crochet" in my grandma's backyard. And Spencer and Danielle LOVED collecting snails. They collected the snails during the day and as soon as they went to bed, grandma snuck out and let the snails go. She didn't want to be cruel to the poor snails. I mean, she'll use snail poison. But didn't want them to suffer death by capture in a box.

Oh, we had fun. Great to see my grandma. She's got more energy than any other grandma I know. Great to let my kids get to know her, even if they did keep her up all night. Thanks for the great memories!

Angry Birds Save the Night

Spencer woke up in the night and something was wrong. Wrong in the way he looked at me. He didn't look at me like I was his mom. I think he was still asleep and dreaming. As I approached him, he ran and hid from me. And then when I came over to him, he looked at me kind of like he was afraid of me. It was as if I was a stranger. I've never experienced anything like it. It was kind if freaking me out. He was bawling. I knew if I could somehow wake him up, everything would be okay and he would go back to sleep. But I couldn't snap him out of it.

I tried everything I could think of for a good 30 minutes. nothing worked. He just stood there crying with that scared look on his face, staring at me.

And then I had an idea. I grabbed my phone and turned the volume up and started playing Angry Birds. I seriously can't stand that game because it it such a waste if time. But Spencer LOVES that blasted game. And I occasionally let him play it. In a short amount of time he has mastered all the levels.

Anyways, I start playing with the volume up loud. I acted like I am struggling to kill those pigs. I just can't figure out how to pull that sling back and make the birds crash down the pig's towers and could I please, please have some help?

Something snapped in Spencer and suddenly he was awake and all over showing me how to defeat those pigs. He even showed me a short video clip because he defeated the king pig.

All at 1:30am.

Thank you Angry Birds.

Laryngitis

My mom flew out to help me drive home since Evan wasn't able to take that much time off from work.

So nice of her.

We picked her up from the airport and went to her favorite place, IHOP. Yum.

My mom has 8 children. But sometimes her patience is a little short. She isn't above yelling, either. So a long road trip coul be interesting.

So grateful to have my mom help me out with the trip, but it really is asking a lot of her. Especially when the kids try her patience and make her practice self control.

And then it happened. We were all singing "on Top of Spaghetti" when her voice left. It didn't just quiet down. It left. And what remained was just quieter than a whisper.

No yelling.

No talking.

No telling the kids to stop whatever they were doing that was driving her crazy.

Self control? No problem. She just sat there and drove and didn't say a word.

Taneal occasionally giggled because the quiet was such a contrast from normal with Grammy.

At first Grammy would give dagger looks. After two days she gave up and resigned to silence.

It has been a fun trip. Even without words, Grammy has been fun. She just has to grin and bear it.

Good character building. Right?

Road Trip

This has been one heck of a road trip. All for a reunion.

We intended to leave at 3am and drive as far as we could, knowing we had a total of 24 drive time hours before we reached our destination. I have been trying to get out of going to a reunion solely because of the long drive.

Who are we kidding? 24 hours driving with six young children is, well, insane.

We didn't end up leaving until 10:30am. Only 7 hours later than planned.

Not really a problem unless you have a brain like mine.

My internal alarm clock woke up when we were supposed to leave. So I had been awake entirely too long before the trip even started. And I can't sleep in the car. Falling asleep at the wheel isn't a problem. But I get so exhausted leading to lack of patience and creativity. Defiantly things needed for a long road trip.

The kids did really well. Had I known they could travel this well I wouldn't have put off attending a reunion for 7 years. It had nothing to do with 4 of those 7 years I had a baby. My last 4 babies were born in the summer right around reunion time.

The first day we travelled until 11:39 pm. And let me tell you the pillows and sheets at the La Quinta never felt so good. But my kids clocks had not adjusted to the new time zone and they awoke at 5:30am. Did I mention Evan as one of those kids? He was cracking the whip and ready to go.

Evan can also sleep in the car no problem. Evan can sleep anywhere no problem. A few hours down the road and he was ready for his cat nap and so I took over driving. It actually worked really well. But by the time we pulled into the hotel 16 later close to where the reunion was to take place, I was exhausted.

The kids were doing well, evan seemed great, but I was done.

Oh yah. I joined that summer if seals workout crazy thing. I have to get 4 workouts in a week even with traveling. Entertaining kids in the car for hours on end should count as a double workout.

So I ran laps in the parking lot at 11pm. Yes, I looked pretty idiotic. But I got my workout in and we safely, sanely made
It to the reunion.

We are slowing it down on the trip home.

Red Ear Slider

Look what Camie found. Cute little turtle. She is trying to make it a home in my house.

I like to keep critters in their natural home. I'm sure it is torture for them to be out of their normal habitat. Camie assures me the ducks were trying to eat it and so by her intercepting, we saved it's life. It can stay for a few days. Then we'll take it home.

It really is pretty cute. And tiny. I love that she'll touch it and hold it.

Head Glove

That Nathan of mine is so funny. He comes up with the most interesting comments, phrases, and observations.

For some reason he was putting socks on his hands and feet. He called them gloves. He played with Spencer for awhile like that.

He can keep himself busy for hours. I've tried to get him to watch movies and his busy little body just won't let him. At least most of the time.

After playing with the gloves/socks on his hands and feet for a while, he came up to me ( at least I think it was me) and asked if he could have a "head glove". How appropriate. He had gloves on his hands. Gloves on his feet. And now he needed a glove for his head. I got him a stocking cap, or what he usually refers to as his "bad guy hat", and Nathan was thrilled.

Head glove. That's a new one

The 8 of Us

Why is it that when I get around my brothers and sister that suddenly all sense of adulthood and maturity flees? When I am around my brothers, suddenly I want to give "wet willies" and make faces or show my chewed up food. I also want to eat really bad food and stay up late and not take responsibility for my children.

Now I don't do all those things. But I want to.

I still try to be a good mom. And I didn't give anyone a wet willie. I think I only showed my chewed up food to my brother Dan, 'cause he appreciates it the most.

Even with all my immaturity coming out, I always have so much fun being with my brothers and sisters. Maybe it is because the immaturity comes out is why I have so much fun. I can relax and enjoy the good company. I have five brothers and two sisters. There is a whole bunch of us.

A few weeks ago we traveled to my parents house. Every one of my brothers and sisters was there. It was awesome! I am still waiting for the family picture we took. But I did get some fun pictures.

The weekend was all too short and we were only able to stay two days. My children had fun with their cousins and it was all happy.

Okay, maybe not all happy for my mom. She had to be the mature one. And maybe not so much for the spouses, their immaturity doesn't seem to come out much either. But my dad joins in on the fun and doesn't appear to be too stressed or annoyed.

The eight of us had a great time!

Swim Team Results 2011

We always forget just how good we were at swim team, so I'm going to post the results so that we know. And can easily look it up because it has a June date. Here we are, the times at the last swim meet, the red shows their time at the beginning of the summer:

FreeStyle:
Taneal (50Y)- 36.66 40.28
Camie(25Y) - 21.61 22.9
Danielle(25Y) - 33.23 48.95
Spencer(25Y) - 52.38 7:27:28

BreastStroke
Taneal (50Y) 49.12 54.10
Camie(25Y) 36.75 48.41

Backstroke
Taneal(50Y) 47.60 52.67
Camie(25Y) 26.56 26.73
Danielle(25Y) 41.44 52.67

Butterfly
Taneal(50Y) 42:86 44:56
Camie(25Y) 29.60 34.51

Individual Medley (IM)
Taneal 1:53:00 1:46:43

Are you wondering why Taneal's swim time for IM isn't improved? Youll have to ask her. But as a hint, she refused to do the IM. Freaked out crying. I told her she didn't have to, but if she didn't do it (because she said she was too tired), she could go home and nap instead of going to birthday party. So she went ahead and swam it and to try to make me mad she swam super slow. As she was finishing up, she realized she was winning, she sped up and won. Not too shabby for slacking on it and still winning.

A Family of Swimmers

Here is my group of swimmers. Aren't they beautiful? After trying to learn swimming myself, I am so impressed with this bunch. Spencer just turned five and can swim better than me.

I guess I may have mistitled this post, but here is the portion of my family that swims!

Plus Evan. (he swims too).

Babysitting Woes

Is it okay if I laugh my head off at what happened to Taneal? I should be ever so grateful and oh, so compassionate. But it is one of the funniest things EVER!

Did I mention I am doing the Summer of Seals? We have a wonderful lady that is the coach of my children's swim team. She opens the pool each morning at 5:30 for the parents of the swim team swimmers to come do laps. So, I have being seizing the opportunity and swimming. Evan has been occasionally going with me. It is great. Maybe not the 5:30am part, but the swimming.

I admit I am a sucker for babies crying. They cry, I give in. Toddlers cry, no problem. But babies? Yah. Gavin still sleeps with me. I know, I know. I've already lectured myself. And Gavin also crawls. So, if I'm not in bed and he wakes up, that could be disastrous. Solution? I wake Taneal up as I am leaving and she crawls in my bed and sleeps with Gavin.

This morning didn't go so well. Gavin woke up crying. Taneal tried to take care of him and it didn't work. She just doesn't have the right equipment. She can't nurse him. And that was what he wanted. She tried many things (no, she didn't try nursing him) but to no avail. Finally she decided to give him a bath. And for some reason she decided to climb in the bath with him.

So there they are in the bath together. When suddenly, Gavin pooped.

I can't even imagine how fast Taneal exited that bath tub. He is still nursing a lot, so the poop wasn't contained. It was ALL OVER THE PLACE!

Poor Taneal. Great story for me. Glad it wasn't me.

She is a super star baby sitter. Oh, how I love that girl.

And what is even funnier, is she took a picture of the tub full of poop. I didn't dare post that picture because it was quite disgusting. Glad she was able to laugh about it. I think she just wanted proof of what really happened.

Swim Team Pictures - Taneal

Not all of us have a trained eye like a mother of her own children. I can make that claim. I can tell you which child is mine in a line up of 200 children all wearing a team swim suit, cap and goggles. I'm pretty good. Want to know my secret? Buy them a different swim cap. And if they don't wear that swim cap, suddenly they blend in with all the other swimmers and I find myself taking pictures of and cheering for the wrong child.

Taneal is in the dark blue swim cap with the white writing. She didn't wear her normal swim cap because she has been complaining that it is too tight. During her first swim it actually came off into the water. So she wore a borrowed one but warned me first. Whew!

She is in the middle lane here.

And finishing up. Can ya tell she finished first in her heat? Yah, me neither. But she did. She is an awesome swimmer.
